Dury de Bagh

EN Born in Baghdad, Dury de Bagh fled from his hometown aged 14, with a fake ID’s. Not wishing to join a long stint in the army like his five elder brothers before him. he travelled with a group of Kurds to Turkey and Greece before coming to Berlin, after a few months set back when he had to return home.
On his travels De Bagh picked up a guitar from Syria, which became his most prized possession. Having sang as a muezzin at his local mosque aged ten he was used to projecting his voice to a large audience and began making money with his music, employing the unique Iraqi  maqam melody type which he still uses today; and which makes his sound so unique. His sound also developed under the influence of others travelling with him on his journey, fellow ‘gypsies’. He says, “I transform my experiences into music. Sad and happy at the same time.”
Living only from the money he made through his musical performances on his travels, De Bagh began to accumulate a large fan base with people in Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan all appreciating his familiar Baghdad style.
De Bagh’s music is also appreciated further afield, and since moving to Berlin in 2009 the singer has also gained a large Berlin based audience. Despite originally moving here for love, the city has also enchanted the singer and he speaks fondly of  Neukölln, describing the areas as a “beautiful bubble”. He says if someone asks him where in Germany he is from he would not say Berlin, but  Neukölln – “I prefer the energy on the other side of this beautiful city.” De Bagh opened an Art/Music cafe in Neukölln where he performes every weekend with his Band, the Brilliants Gidi Farhi on Double Bass and Volkan Gündüz on Baglama.
