[DEU] In den späten 90er Jahren sind Radian angetreten, mit Instrumenten und Methoden der experimentellen Elektronik, Rockmusik in einer abstrahierten Form weiterzuspinnen und akustische und elektronische Musik auf einzigartige Weise organisch zusammenzuführen. So entstand eine Musik zwischen Ausbruch und Konzentration, zwischen Explosion und Implosion, mit harten Brüchen und einer großen dynamischen Bandbreite, sowie dem Mut zu prominent platzierten Momenten der Stille.
Schon in den frühen 2000ern begann eine langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit dem Chicagoer Label Thrill Jockey, die ihnen ermöglichte, sowohl mit John McEntire (Tortoise) zusammenzuarbeiten als auch ihre Alben international zu verbreiten, die u.a. von der New York Times und The Wire ausgiebig rezipiert wurden. Auf ihren Konzerten und weltweiten Tourneen konnten sich Radian einen Ruf als exzellente Live-Band erspielen („Radian is an incredibly well oiled machine“, „This trio’s showcase is intense“ – Mutek Festival, Montréal; „Radian went down a storm“ – The Wire). 2023 ist ihr aktuelles Album „Distorted Rooms“ erschienen.
[ENG] Since the late 90’s Radian have been pushing the boundaries between abstract sounds and beat oriented rhythms, as documented by extensive worldwide touring & festivals appearances, as well as on 7 full-length albums. Their new record Distorted Rooms, released on Thrill Jockey in April 2023, further expands on their unique vision of re-thinking conventional use of forms, patterns and sounds. While their last longplayer ‘On Dark Silent Off’ emphasized extreme changes in dynamic range and abrupt cuts, and dealt with the relation between noise bursts and prominently placed moments of silence, ‘Distorted Rooms’ (Thrill Jockey , 2023) focuses more on slow developments and repetitive structures. The original instrumentation is even more in disguise, and the moments of abstraction happen more on sub- and / or meta-levels, often leaving it to the listener to choose where to put the focus and which lines of development (or non-development) to follow (or rest in). Like handing over the choice of where to put the magnifying glass / attention within a kaleidoscope-like array of fine woven parallel sounds, structures, forms and motives.
